If you run a home based business you may be missing out on Google local search traffic because you do not want to have your home address listed on the internet. As a freelancer I know I have been in this position, but you don’t have to be, the solution is a service area listing.
This is a very easy process, first go to GoogleMyBusiness and click the start now button at the top right of the screen.
You will now see a map and a form so that you can enter the details for your business.
If you have a home based business you will need to use your home address here as google will be sending you a verification code through the post, don’t worry though your address will not form part of the listing.
The important thing here is to make sure that you answer Yes to the final statement that reads “I deliver goods and services to my customers at their location”, this is what is going to create the service area listing and bring you into the local search listings without showing an address.
When you click continue the next screen allows you to set the service area you serve.
Choose your service area by either selecting a region or specifying how far from your business (home) you “deliver” to.
The important part on this screen is again the last statement which starts with “I also serve customers at my business location…” make sure this box is not ticked and your address will be hidden from the public.
That’s it, when people use local search on Google you will appear in the listings down the left hand side of the page but you will not have a pin shown on the map so no one will turn up at your house.
